Four late goals gave Real Madrid a deserved win over ten-man Athletic Bilbao to keep the La Liga race with Barcelona alive until the final matchday.

The scoreboard may have read 5-1 at full time, but despite this eventual mauling, the hosts endured a nervy evening in which at more than one point their title hopes seemed to be on the verge of expiration.

Fernando Amorebieta's early red card and the ensuing Cristiano Ronaldo penalty seemed set to pave an easy road for the Blancos, but Fran Yeste's equaliser just before the break made for a nervy second half.

However strikes from Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema gave Manuel Pellegrini's side a fighting chance at the championship, with the Merengues needing Barcelona to lose next weekend following the Catalans' 3-2 win over Sevilla.
